Dougal

26.06.95 - 29.11.08

I am so very sad to be writing this post to my Mum and Dad about Dougal their lovely, sweet dog, that had to be put to sleep last week.

Dougal went to live with you at just 8 weeks old and you gave him a long and very happy life. He was one in a million and I know you will miss him so much but he will live forever in your hearts. Remember the good times and the fun you had. Remember the games of ball every night, the 4 legs in the air in the mornings, the games of chase around the sofa, the cuddles and, of course, the shared meals!

Dougal was the most amazing dog, so gentle, so loving, so loyal, so faithful and so loved by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. I hope you will find comfort in the fact that your lovely little dog touched so many people.

Dougal loved his walks with you Mum and enjoyed many, many miles of walking together over the years. He even came to enjoy his walks with his mad nephew and niece, Barney and Pebbles, right up to a few weeks before he passed away. He was so well behaved and I am sure was there to guide my two and show them the way. No more so when it came to the order that the treats were handed out, Dougal, then Barney then Pebbles!

Dougal lived a long, happy and healthy life right up to the end and was very lucky to have found his forever home with you both. You were the perfect match. And he was never happier than when he was with his Mum and Dad.

We will all miss you sweet Dougal. Sleep well lovely, gentle boy xxxxxxx

  1. Thank you Emma for a wonderful "epitaph" for our wee dog Dougal - ever since he selected Mum and me 13 and a half years ago, he has been a treasure - loved and admired by all who ever met him. A wee gentelman!
We miss him terribly and he will never be forgotten.
Sleep well my little best pal.

  2. What a great thing to set up for Dougal the dog!!! Well done Emma

What a loss that must have been? it was a shock to us too but what an age to live to, too! I bet it was 13 great years right till the end?

What a little character he was and such a friendly wee sole. We only saw him a few times and wished he was ours. The girls wanted to have him as theirs but to no avail. I bet you will be lost without him and he'll never be forgotten either. R.I.P Dougal wee man!

  4. "We are so sorry to hear the sad news about Dougal. He truly was a faithful and trusted companion over many years. He was a long term member of the Lindsay Family. It is hard to lose a close friend but more difficult to watch him suffer from deteriorating health. We remember our many visits and Dougal's presence. Our thoughts are with the both of you during this difficult time."

  6. "We are very sorry to hear your news about Dougal. No doubt you are both very upset. When we were together in June it was apparent that he was not as lively as he had been previously."

  7. "We are so sad to receive your message. We know how very upset you must
be. Dougal enjoyed a happy and care free life being so well looked
after. It was fitting that he passed away as he did. The alternatives
would have been so much worse for you all. It is of little consolation
just now but time will replace the hurt with wonderful memories."

  11. Hi Emma - It's Dad (and Mum) here to update our blog comments now that it's a month after we lost our little best pal, Dougal. It's amazing just how much we miss him and when:
We miss him when we're out walking and meet his old friends with their owners and they ask where is Dougal?
We miss him in the mornings and at night when he nagged us (and thumped us with his paw) at 8.00 am precisely to get us out of bed and at 11 pm when it was time to go to bed!
We miss him in the car when this little head would appear from the back between the front seats and a head would fall on one of our shoulders.
We miss him when we watch squirrels and cats annoy the birds in HIS garden and he's not there to chase them off.
We miss him lying in front of us with all four feet in the air as he rested after a hard day.
We miss him scrounging at the kitchen table and we now have to eat every last scrap ourselves.
We miss his ability to develop an activity into a habit when he experienced it more than once.
We miss him sitting in his little chair at the lounge window to watch for us and welcome us home.
We miss the mail when he's not there to bark at the postie.
In fact we simply MISS HIM terribly and undoubtedly will do so for many years to come.
It's nice that his niece (Pebbles) and nephews (Barney and now Mac) come to visit and comfort us - but they too miss the wee man!

  12. Dougal's Mum is back in hospital (in a positive way this time) and I am left for the first time in an empty house - no Dougal!! This is the worst I have felt since he left us in October last year.
Last time Dougal's Mum was in hospital, he was great company and kept me in check with all his daily and hourly demands.
He regimented me to bed at nights and gave me comfort as a companion. He got me up in the mornings and took me for his morning walk.
The house is so empty without him (and his Mum). I miss him so so much. It's when he's no longer here that his presence is very badly missed.

  13. Dougal's Mum is back from hospital and is making a fine recovery.
We both miss Dougal terribly - he was our constant companion - on walks, to hotels, to visit friends (who insisted that we bring Dougal) and in the car.
We've placed a stone and a plaque in our garden in his memory - he simply loved his garden - most days he would walk the boundaries to check for intruders! (his pet hate being equally cats and grey squirrels).

  14. Sadly my gran and Pa's dog Dougal had to be put to sleep at the grand old age of 14 because he had be suffering from a serious illness. The reason i am so upset is because he was the first dog i ever loved. We are all upset but we will always love him! WE MISS YOU DOUGAL

  15. It's over a year since we lost our dear Dougal and we still miss him terribly, especially when we are out walking. He's also greatly missed at home where his presence was so comforting - and in our garden where cats now roam free from attack!!
Sleep well our dear little boy!

  16. We have just returned from our first Hogmanay visit to the Coul House country hotel since Dougal passed on. We have been going there for over 10 years and it was one of Dougal's favourite hotels - he was treated as a special guest and was a favourite of the two daughters of the hotel owner who took him for the occasional walk. He also loved the company of other dogs of fellow guests. This year there were around 12 other dogs and Dougal would have been in doggie heaven.
It was so hard for us to go for our normal walks around the hotel grounds without this small black treasure pottering and sniffing his way round.
He was missed also by fellow guests whom he made his friends.
WE STILL MISS YOU TERRIBLY DOUGAL
